LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1 – During a conference call devoted to Tesla’s financial results, Elon Musk confirmed that the automaker will not launch a new model in 2022 and that it will focus on developing its robotic project codenamed Optimus.
This summer, Elon Musk caused quite a stir when he unveiled a bizarre concept of a humanoid robot, embodied at the time by a human in a suit. Today, this project is gaining momentum and a prototype is expected later this year.
According to The Verge, Elon Musk said, “In terms of product priority, I think the most important product development we’re doing this year is actually the Optimus humanoid robot. I think that’s probably going to be bigger than the car business over time.”
Elon Musk is particularly ambitious about the uses for this futuristic robot. He must be able to perform repetitive, often mundane, and sometimes dangerous tasks without being weakened. Ideally, it can perform errands, help carry heavy loads, or hold bolts. However, this is all science fiction for now. If it sees the light soon, the Optimus will likely be used in Tesla’s production lines to store or assemble certain parts.
This Tesla robot concept has a human figure of about 1.75m and a weight of 56kg. During movement, it should not exceed 8 km / h, and in terms of disposition, it is expected that it will be “friendly”.
