For the third generation TUXEDO Gemini 17 AMD, the German manufacturer has big ambitions. For example, I invite you to replace a powerful desktop computer with a 17.3-inch laptop model running Linux, with 32 cores. Autopsy.
toA first glance is enough to understand that the new TUXEDO Gemini 17 2024 doesn’t really care about style and design. It’s not the first prize for beauty, but that’s not its ambition either. Instead, it focuses more on getting back to basics like powerful cooling in a reasonably portable form factor, a large 17.3-inch display with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics.
In short, it’s a powerful, professional workstation that’s more portable than a laptop. While the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX isn’t exactly new, its combination of performance and efficiency is not only on par with the fastest high-end processors currently available from Apple and Intel, it’s often better. And its manufacturer is convinced of this.
The Gemini 17 – Gen3 is not a super-slim fashion piece for a trendy opening or coffee shop. The Gemini 17 is a classic desktop workstation replacement, in a portable format. With an overall height of less than 2.9 cm and a weight of 2.8 kg, this Linux “desktop replacement” is not designed to be carried around all the time, but it still allows for convenient transport over short to medium distances.
In return, users benefit from a more efficient cooling system, allowing for better performance or less fan noise. The Gemini 17 features a 17.3-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, with FreeSync technology up to 165 Hz.
The Gemini 17 offers options for up to 96GB of DDR5-5200 RAM, while two M.2 SSD slots can be configured with up to 8TB of capacity for permanent data storage. On the port side, there are two DisplayPort 1.4 (1 via USB-C 3.2 Gen2, 1 Mini DisplayPort) and an HDMI 2.1, allowing you to connect up to 3 external displays. A USB-C port connects to the Ryzen 9 7945HX’s integrated graphics processor. In addition to a second USB-C port, which allows the laptop to be charged via a 100W power supply, there are also two USB-A ports and an RJ45 LAN port for data transfer, plus a 2-in-1 headphone/microphone combo and a Kensington lock.
Like all TUXEDO laptops, the new Gemini 17 – Gen3 – AMD comes with full Linux support (including customer service), pre-installation of all internally developed drivers and software, cloud services, the internal Linux distribution TUXEDO OS, but also Ubuntu or Kubuntu, with the option of full disk encryption, and Windows 11, on request.
The basic configuration with AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 2 x 8 GB DDR5-5200 RAM, 500 GB Samsung 980 SSD and TUXEDO OS starts at €1427 excluding tax (VAT). You can configure it with the French keyboard On request during configuration.
