Yesterday at around 10:40 p.m., a 67-year-old man from Wessel filed a complaint at the police station.

He had received a message from his alleged daughter via WhatsApp around 4:45 pm. The alleged daughter stated in the letter that her cell phone was defective and that she would send him this message from an old phone. Because she badly needed a new mobile phone, she needed money. Accordingly, Weseler transferred the three-digit sum in good faith.

That same evening the fraud was discovered.

The police indicate:

Scammers leave no stone unturned to get your money!

In Whatsapp messages, you are pretending to be a grandson, son or daughter.

Then a story is invented about why the sender got a new phone number. Soon thereafter, there is usually a request for funds in the three- or four-digit range due to the emergency.

Especially note: In many cases, scammers insist on making a real-time transfer. Often they bring up reasons such as the fact that Internet banking does not yet work on the new smartphone.

If messages are coming from unknown numbers, always check the correct known number! Because once the money is transferred, it is gone.

Do not save the assumed new number directly. Ask the known old number if there is a new one. If you are not sure: Call the new unknown number and/or the old number.

Keep calm and don’t let yourself get under pressure! If the money has already been transferred, contact your bank. Submit a criminal complaint to the police. Backup phone number and chat history with screenshots.
