Sony has confirmed that sales of the PlayStation 5 with the drive will no longer come at a loss for the company.
It’s an open secret that, especially at the start of a new generation of consoles, manufacturers like Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo usually incur losses with every console sold and rely on good software sales to make a profit. The PlayStation 5 released by Sony in November of last year was no exception.
During Sony’s quarterly business conference, CFO Hiroki Totoki announced that the sale of the PlayStation 5 with the drive (499 euros) will no longer result in losses for the company. This is still the case with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (399 euros), but it can be offset by sales of other devices such as the PlayStation 4 or peripherals.
To date, 10.1 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been shipped worldwide. By the end of the current fiscal year, Sony aims to have 14.8 million units. Totoki also stressed that this project will not fail due to the lack of semiconductor chips.
