macOS Monterey is here, here are all its new features

The new version of macOS is available! Is your Mac compatible? How is it installed? And above all, what are its novelties?

Enough. After several months in beta since macOS Monterey was introduced during WWDC in June, Apple has just released the final version of its new Mac operating system.

To install it, go to Mac System Preferences. Then head to “system update”, then wait for your page to refresh. When deploying macOS Monterey to your device, all you have to do is follow the instructions on this page. Your computer will restart and you will then be able to access all the new features of Apple’s new operating system for Mac.

Also, make sure that your Mac is already compatible with this new version of Apple’s operating system before starting this process. To check your model, click the apple in the top left, then About this Mac. The operating system is available on the following devices:

  • MacBook (12-inch): Early 2016
  • MacBook Air: from early 2015
  • MacBook Pro: early 2015
  • iMac: From the end of 2015
  • Mac mini: Late 2014
  • Mac Pro: Late 2013
  • iMac Pro

Safari

One of the major new features of macOS Monterey is the new version of Safari that it introduces. The browser offers a fully revised address bar. Tabs now adopt the color of the site displayed. On geek magazineFor example, the tab should be in its distinct color so that you can easily find your page. This new presentation, called “zipped”, can however be deactivated by using the “split” display to bring back the tabs below the address bar.

Also, there are Tab Groups, which, as its name suggests, allows you to group multiple tabs together so you don’t lose them. It kind of looks like a folder regrouping the tabs you’ve slipped in there.

concentration

like in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15Mac introduces new modes of focus. This is an extension of Do Not Disturb mode that allows you to create specially designed profiles and filter notifications according to your activity: work, rest, time to yourself …

This status is also synced to your other Apple devices, just as it is displayed to your contacts in your iMessage conversations.

confrontation time

Apple’s video conferencing system evolved with macOS Monterey. A cool novelty that it escapes the shackles of the Mac and is exported to other media! Thus, it will be possible to invite users on Windows or Android to join a FaceTime conversation via a link accessible from a browser.

We also found other new features found on FaceTime with iOS/iPadOS 15, such as the Sound Isolation mode, which will effectively eliminate parasitic sounds and allow you to better hear your interlocutor, or “Broad Spectrum”, which allows for “reverse” tuning. A background blur option is also available with macOS Monterey, but only for Mac users with a SoC M1, M1 Pro, or M1 Max.

broadcast

Do you often use your Mac as an external monitor? That’s fine, because with macOS Monterey, your PC takes a new step. If it is already possible to stream your Mac’s screen to an external display via AirPlay, then the computer screen itself becomes a receiver for other devices. Concretely, you will be able to view the content that is being streamed on your iPhone or iPad right on the screen of your Mac.

However, this option will not be available with all Macs. It will require at least a 2018 MacBook Pro, Air, 2019 iMac, 2020 Mac mini, 2019 Mac Pro, or iMac Pro.

text in photo

Just like in the iPhone and iPad, the Mac adopts the text-in-picture functionality. Concretely, you can simply copy/paste text from an image. By hovering your cursor over text in an image, you will be able to select it as if it were a simple block of text.

universal control

While showing macOS Monterey during WWDC 2021, one feature particularly impressed us: Universal Control. The idea is to be able to move the mouse between its different devices. For example, if you have an iPad to the right of your MacBook, you just need to drag the cursor to the right for it to appear on the tablet.

The most impressive thing is that this functionality can work on multiple devices. During the conference, Apple especially presented iPads, MacBooks and the latest iMac 24″ Side by side, before moving the cursor between these three devices, and even dragging/drag files from iPad to iMac, via MacBook!

Problem: Universal Control will not be available immediately upon launch of macOS Monterey. We’ll have to wait a few more weeks before we can pass the cursor between Mac and iPad.

In addition to these new features, there are also some welcome additions, such as the arrival of the Quick Note function, allowing you to easily create a note by moving the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen, some new features in Split Side View, new privacy settings in Mail or features New in Messages, Maps and Battery Management.
