Wireless charging doesn’t bring as much freedom as the name suggests – although it does technically allow you to charge a device without attaching a cable, that’s about it. True wireless charging is not far behind, however, as today Ossia announced a partnership with Archos to launch gadgets that can be charged over the air with true wireless charging technology, and there will be next year.
Back to CES 2016, We were blown away by the company’s first performances in Ossia Cota Real . Wireless Power Technology. For most of us, wireless charging means placing a smartphone, wireless headphones, or smartwatch on a small pad to charge it. It’s more convenient than arguing about a cable, but it still means that these devices basically have to be left for a few hours to fully charge.
True wireless power, which Ossia’s Cota promises, allows the device to begin charging as soon as it approaches a wireless power transmitter. You walk into a room with a transmitter installed (it can be hidden behind ceiling tiles or hidden behind furniture) and your smartphone will instantly start charging on its own, whether you’re actively using it or buried in a pocket or bag.
You can find a more detailed explanation of how to supply Cota wireless power Technology works here, but one of the biggest challenges in presenting it to consumers is that the devices require a special RF receiver chip to access wireless power transmissions. Until other companies agreed to include the Cota chip in their machines, Ossia created improved aftermarket parts like a Cota . The first public demos of the Cota were in nearly five years, but today Ossia finally revealed the first set of tools that will be immediately compatible with Cota. UNEE and even if the French company Archos is unknown, this is another step in the right direction for this innovative technology.
Exact pricing and availability outside of ETA 2022 has yet to be finalised, nor are the final designs for these devices yet, but Archos promises four Cota-compatible gadgets next year: an indoor wireless camera that can be installed anywhere without worrying about its battery dying displays, air quality and temperature, and a tracker. A smartwatch that automatically recharges when you get home, and a smartwatch that can be worn throughout the day and night indefinitely, making it useful for tracking both daytime activities and sleep behaviors.
These four devices won’t necessarily change the world, but they will help demonstrate the usefulness and resilience of Ossia’s Cota technology and hopefully inspire other device makers to join us as well. But all of that assumes that Ossia is finding a way to make her Cota wireless power transmitter affordable, too.
