Logitech unveils the spatial pen for Oculus Quest headphones

Logitech has just announced the upcoming release of MX Ink, a 3D pen designed to help Oculus Quest VR headset users with their creative tasks.

Technically, it's already possible to draw or sculpt using the standard controllers on the Quest 2 and 3 headsets, but this device is designed to make the experience easier and more precise compared to those controllers designed more for video games and navigation.

At first glance, the MK ink seems rather thick, even compared to what brands like Wacom offer with their graphics tablets. It's actually fuller than a regular pencil or pen, but the MK ink feels more like a large marker.

In terms of functionality, it has several buttons that can be reprogrammed as desired in the speaker's settings menu, without going through a specific application. It also comes with different pressure-sensitive, replaceable tips – a concept already familiar to those familiar with graphics tablets. The beauty of the cake is that it also has a haptic feedback system. To make the experience even smoother, Logitech will also offer a mat called the MX Mat, which is described as “ Friction-free writing and drawing environment “.

But the difference compared to traditional styles is that MK Ink also includes motion and orientation sensors with 6 degrees of freedom allowing the helmet to follow in 3D space. In other words, there is no need for a surface to draw or paint: it should be possible to do it directly in 3D space. The benefit of this function is not really clear to designers, but it will be interesting to see if it represents a real added value for 3D modeling specialists.

Finally, let's also point out that the stylus will not be compatible with all Meta headsets. Surprisingly, the brand confirmed that it will be dedicated to Quest 2 and Quest 3; On the other hand, the Quest Pro won't support this $130 stylus.

However, you will have to wait a bit to find out, because MK Ink will not be released before September, perhaps on the 25th or 26th of this month to coincide with the 2024 edition of the Meta Connect event.
