Apple Pencil to replace the Touch Bar

The idea is a little crazy, but it doesn’t come from nothing. Earlier this week, the US Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that explained step-by-step how Apple could integrate the Apple Pencil into its laptops, instead of the existing Touch Bar.

It’s no longer a secret for many people, the Touch Bar will likely leave the Apple ecosystem with the arrival of the expected new generations of MacBook Pro. Until the end of 2021. In order to replace this small element, Apple will study the feasibility of adding the Apple Pencil to its computers, giving it a closer look at the iPad Pro.

An Apple patent shows that the Apple Pencil could have the feature to act like the Touch Bar, also allowing access to function keys.

A project that is unlikely to succeed

Perhaps it was this patent that inspired designer Sarang Sheth, who just created a 3D concept for this future MacBook project. According to his concept, the designer did not make a radical choice to completely remove the Touch Bar, leaving a small space on the right of the computer for Siri and some basic functions.

However, this concept, while very attractive, can never see the light of day. In fact, Apple and its founder Steve Jobs have long advocated that a The computer cannot have a touch screen. The latter would not be practical to use and would be “terrible ergonomics” in the words of the Cupertino founder, who has been questioned about it several times in the past.

An idea that Craig Federigi reiterated again at the end of last year. While I realize there are similarities between iOS, iPadOS, and the new macOS Big Sur, this was by no means the first step towards a touchscreen PC.
