All Bitcoin transactions are public, and anyone can view them. Whirlpool bitcoin shuffling breaks the inevitable links of past transactions and provides forward-looking anonymity. This article shows the easiest way to accumulate your bitcoins so you can take steps to keep your bitcoin resistant traits from censorship and unauthorized use, by showing you how to install and configure a new Samurai wallet on Android.
Samourai Wallet is a mobile-centric and privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet. In addition, connecting Samourai Wallet to a desktop graphical user interface (GUI) from Whirlpool will be covered. Some of the privacy improvement tools included in Samourai Wallet include:
- Whirlpool, CoinJoin App Without Link
- BIP47, a reusable payment code protocol
- PayNyms, unique identifiers that can be used to communicate with peers for collaborative transactions
- Stonewall, a post-mix spending tool that breaks string inference
- Stonewallx2, the post-mix spending tool looks identical to Stonewall on the series but is actually made of two counterparts
- Stowaway, a post-shuffle spending tool that hides the amount spent
- Ricochet, a post-mix spending tool that adds extra leaps between final payment destination
- Advanced room control
- Separate wallets for pre and post bitcoin deposit and mix
The Whirlpool app can be used directly from the Samourai Wallet mobile app without any additional configuration. However, if you’re not using your own node, you’re trusting someone else. Using a Samourai wallet along with your Dojo on RoninDojo Tanto gives you the most privacy-conscious solution, because you don’t trust anyone else’s node, you are using your own node.
Every bitcoin wallet, whether mobile or desktop, must collect information about wallet balances and transaction history from a bitcoin node; It is recommended to use your own node, but it is not a requirement because many wallet developers provide publicly accessible node. This section will show you how to use the Samourai wallet without your own node, as it is the easiest and fastest way to get started.
Step one: prepare
Before you begin, it will be helpful to have a recovery sheet or notebook to jot down the initial phrase and passphrase information.
Step Two: Download
You can download the Samourai Wallet app from the F-Droid repository, website, or from the Google Play Store.
Step Three: Initialization
Simply install the app and follow the on-screen system instructions. Once the application is launched, select “MAINNET”.
Then you will be greeted with a useful presentation.
Next, you will be asked to choose a directory to store the encrypted wallet backup file. Then allow access to the system.
Then you can enable the Enable Tor option. Leave the option to connect to your Dojo disabled to use the default settings which will communicate with the Samourai Wallet Dojo node instead of the private Dojo node. Then press the “Create New Wallet” button in Samourai Wallet. Or, if you have a wallet you want to import, select the Restore Existing Wallet option instead.
Next, you will be asked to create a passphrase. Using a strong, high-entropy passphrase will help protect your bitcoin in the event that your initial 12-word phrase is compromised.
Check the box that says you understand that no one can help you recover a lost or forgotten passphrase. Also keep in mind that any passphrase you enter will generate a completely different wallet, so make sure you spell it correctly and double-check your work. If you ever need to restore your wallet and enter a passphrase that is disabled even by a single character, it will create a completely different wallet. After entering your passphrase, the app will ask you if you want to download the recovery sheet.
The next screen will display an initial 12-word phrase. Do not share these words with anyone for any reason. These 12 words are a human-readable representation of the Bitcoin private key. Anyone with access to these words and passphrase can take your bitcoin. Do not photograph these words. Do not take a picture of these words. Do not save it in a text file or other digital format. Make sure you write them in order, then secure that initial phrase as if it were silver, gold, or jewelry. Many people choose to stamp their wallet recovery information (initial phrase and passphrase) with a metal that can withstand harsh environments such as fires and floods. You can find more information on this topic here.
Next, you will be asked to confirm the passphrase you entered and then generate a PIN. A PIN will be required to access the Samourai Wallet app. Use a strong PIN that cannot be easily guessed or identical to the PIN to access the primary phone.
Finally, you will be presented with your own unique PayNym, which you can claim so that others can easily connect with you. Then you will be in the main screen, you can click on the blue “+” sign to see the options for Whirlpool, Send, Receive and PayNym. The receive option, for example, allows you to generate new Bitcoin addresses.
Step Four: Whirlpool Mobile App
You now have a mobile bitcoin wallet with built-in privacy tools that communicate through Tor. Congratulations, this is a big step on the path to sovereignty. Go ahead and earn bitcoins for goods or services, buy some at an ATM or earn mining rewards.
Once you receive the bitcoins you wish to mix, simply follow these steps from your Samourai mobile wallet:
- Select the blue “+” sign and then the “Whirlpool” button
- This will launch the Whirlpool mobile client, then select the “Whirlpool” button again
- Select the option “Mix UTXOs”
- The list of UTXOs available in your deposit wallet will be displayed. Select the UTXOs you want to mix, then click Next. Keep in mind that if any of the UTXOs have a record that you don’t want to associate with each other, consider selecting them independently of each other.
- Set the priority of the cycle (miner fees), select the appropriate pool size for the amount you are mixing, then select Review Cycle Details.
- You will be presented with the details of the TX0 that you are about to make. Select “BEGIN CYCLE” when you are ready and the transaction will be generated and then broadcast to the Bitcoin network.
Now the output UTXOs from TX0 will be saved as available input for a new mix. Once mixed, your UTXOs will be in your wallet after mixing. From there, every time you open the Whirlpool client in your Samourai Wallet mobile app, UTXOs will be saved as available entries for mixes looking for free riders. Mixing stops once the Whirlpool mobile client is closed.
Step Five: Whirlpool with Standalone GUI
Going forward, there is a way to achieve 24/7 mashup even when the app on your mobile is closed. You can install the Whirlpool GUI on your desktop, connect it to your mobile wallet, and the desktop GUI will keep your UTXOs mingled.
First, you will need to download the appropriate Whirlpool client for your operating system. The various options along with accompanying developer signatures can be found here and detailed installation instructions can be found here. Be aware that you may also need to install OpenJDK, which is covered in the installation instructions.
After installing the Whirlpool client application, launch it, and then select the “Standalone: Standalone GUI” option. Then click Continue.
Give the GUI some time, Tor connections may take a while. You may need to try several times before the connection is established. But once the connection is established, you will be presented with a screen asking you to enter the Whirlpool pairing payload from your Samurai wallet. In Samourai Wallet, click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select “Settings” then “Transactions” and then “Associate with Whirlpool GUI” at the bottom. This will display a QR code containing your Whirlpool load. Just click on the QR code option in the desktop GUI and you should turn on your webcam, then hold the QR code on your mobile so the camera can scan it.
Once received, click on Configure GUI.
Next, enter your Samourai wallet passphrase and click “Login”.
Once logged in, you should be able to see your balances and random activity, and then you can set goals for the number of correspondences you want to achieve. You can even create deposit addresses from the Whirlpool GUI.
Now when you start mixes from your Samourai Wallet mobile app, you can close the app afterwards and your UTXO will continue to be saved as input available to mixes of free riders for as long as your desktop client is still running. This setting uses the default Samourai Wallet node as the background. For network privacy, the connection is via Tor. This can also be configured to use your own node instead.
