In a statement, NASA announced the launch of a test campaign for a future manned mission to Mars. The space agency has notably launched a call for applications to simulate life on the Red Planet. The selected candidates will not leave Earth, but will be quarantined at a simulation base located in Texas for one year.

Three simulations planned by NASA

The program called Chapea (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) includes three representative tasks. According to the US space agency, this simulation will help to understand and deal with the technical and psychological challenges astronauts will face before leaving for the Red Planet.

The first simulation will begin in the fall of 2022. The crew members will have to live for one year on a base built by Icon. Dubbed “Mars Dune Alpha,” the latter was installed in the heart of the Johnson Space Center in Texas. According to Jason Ballard, co-founder of Icon, it will be the most faithful simulation of habitat ever created by a human.

Criteria for participating in the simulation

Four people will be recruited for each mission. They will have to deal with limited resources, equipment failure, transmission delays and other environmental stresses. In addition, the tasks of the crew may also include simulation of spacewalks, scientific research, the use of virtual reality and robotics, and communication exchange.

Desired candidates Participate in the simulation You will have to meet some criteria. NASA says it is looking for healthy and motivated US citizens or permanent residents, between the ages of 30 and 55, with a strong desire for adventure.
