Northheim police are warning of a new scam. It’s called “smishing” and is similar to the well-known “phishing”, in which malware is sent to your computer via e-mail.
When using SMS, the corresponding program is sent via SMS to the mobile phone, police explain. An attempt was made to install malware on a cell phone via a link sent. This is often disguised as a kind of modernization. After installing the program, the perpetrators can access the personal data on the cell phone.
Police reported an existing text message case from Bad Gandersheim: A 57-year-old woman received several text messages between March 18-29, in which she was asked to open a link to look at parcel tracking capable of describing the police. However, since the woman from Bad Gandersheim did not expect an expulsion, she did not comply with the request and thus was saved from spying on her mobile data.
Police now advise “special” caution: “Be vigilant and skeptical if you receive unsolicited SMS messages from phone numbers you do not know. Do not follow these links under any circumstances, otherwise you can install malware on your smartphone.”
