The Guardian frontier system on the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset is already solid, but it looks like it will soon see a huge improvement.
A new function called “Space Sense”, developed by Twitter user Basti564 (Via download VRIt shows how The Guardian, which shows players the edge of their safe space while wearing a VR headset, will become smart enough to show people, pets, and other things entering a room-sized space and causing accidents.

As shown in the video, those who enter the play area will appear with a pink ghostly outline warning you to stay out of their way.
Video and functionality are hidden in Quest v32 firmware, but can be accessed via command line settings. Although the menus can be accessed, the function does not work even if it is activated in the hidden menus.
The text of this function in the user interface is as follows:
Activate Space Sense to see the outlines of people and things within the confines of your room scale. If you always know what’s going on around you in VR, you can protect yourself and others.
“You can see outlines up to three meters away as long as it’s still within your limits and right in front of the headset. You can turn this function off at any time in the settings.”
Analysis: AR ambitions and beneficial upgrades
There has been a lot of talk lately about Oculus entering the realm of augmented reality applications. This, of course, leads us to think of augmented reality games and applications where the real and digital world merge, as with mobile software such as the popular Pokemon Go.
But perhaps use cases like these are more interesting and useful. It’s not about making a dinosaur appear in your living room with an Oculus Quest headset (although that would be cool too), but it’s also about improving existing device features.
Just as Oculus was recently able to see certain consoles in VR (like the Logitech K830), the Space Sense update improves the overall VR experience by making it easier to interact with both the real and digital worlds at the same time. As virtual reality is gradually becoming mainstream, it is the well-thought-out actions like Space Sense that will make it more attractive for beginners. We can’t wait for it to roll out to all users.
