“Each year, it is estimated that there are approximately 500 new board games Exit in France. Despite their experience in the matter, Anita Morinville and Julian Fabriti They are constantly making discoveries. Owners of just under 300 board games and true enthusiasts, created the Board Games Association last January. In Brestot, near Pont-Audemer (ori). After several weeks of administrative organizing, the two founders managed to organize their first evening on Thursday, March 3rd.

On the first and third Thursdays of every month, amateurs and beginners alike are invited to gather to play in Morissette Lefebvre’s room adjacent to the town’s town hall. From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., “even if we can flow a little bit,” Julian Fabritti says, players can come, enjoy, discuss, and engage; Always in a friendly atmosphere. Plateau Thursdays, for the association’s eponymous word game, are gathering more and more people. On Thursday, April 7, it was only the third meeting of the Assembly and yet fifteen people had already gathered, shortly after 7 pm.

The leitmotif of the association: discovery and coexistence.

Go off the beaten track

Board games don’t close any doors. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their level and knowledge of board games. Regardless of age and place of residence. Even if the association is for “people from the Romois plateau and the Pont-Audemer region”, people from further regions are also welcomed with open arms. To play, simply pay €2 per person per evening or an annual €20 subscription. The first entry is also free.

If Anita and Julian decided to create this association here, it was because they noticed a “segment shortage”. It’s “an idea that was already in our heads six months before we moved here. [à Brestot] ‘ continues Julian Fabriti. Residents of the city since September 2021, they hope to develop and share their passion with as many people as possible. Specifically as hobbyists, their interest is to discover more secret games. Although it’s possible, we come to our Thursdays group to play something other than great classics like Monopoly or Mille Bornes. Instead, we seek to think outside the box.

We can discover odd and different things that always make us happy.

If a couple tries to change the fun by changing the dozens of toys they bring each evening, the participants can also recreate and share their discoveries with others. The goal is simple: “Enjoy, mix players for moments of coexistence and sharing, but also to discover new things.”

Thanks to their partnership with two online board game stores, Sortilège in Rouen and l’Odyssée Ludique, members can constantly try new creations. For example, last Thursday, Thomas Couet, member and director of Odysée Ludique, brought home some of the toys he sells in his online store. For those who want to increase investment, it is possible to join the association as a “member”. This requires payment of the €20 membership fee and assistance with the organizational part of the board games. But in return, “Members benefit from a 10% discount with all our partners for the purchase of board games,” the founders explained.

Evenings accessible in sign language

This is one of the small characteristics of the Plato Games Association. In addition to giving everyone the opportunity to play board games in a friendly atmosphere, game evenings are ‘available in sign language’. Anita Morinville, one of the founders of the association, practices sign language and provides personal support to anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. The volunteer was a nurse in the Medical Social Support Service for disabled adults, and was also part of the Soigne en Signes association, which promotes the use of French Sign Language (LSF).
If no Thursdays group participants are exercising LSF at the moment, this is still a very viable option. In addition, in order to enhance this privacy, the Board Games Association will be present at the game night, organized by the Sotteville-lès-Rouen bookstore, in May.

Finally, the emerging association wishes to develop in the future. Already by working alongside other local associations but also by organizing a “Game Festival” in the coming months. And then, Anita and Julian imagine services in different places like media libraries, bookshops, bars, homes for the elderly…always with the same goal: discovery and coexistence.
