Poco F3 test: a heterogeneous smartphone

The Poco F3 offers 3 modules on its gallery, but only two will interest us here. The main unit is 48MP, while the ultra wide angle unit is 8MP. A very classic configuration, seen and reviewed – especially on the latest Redmi Note 9T 5G or the recent Redmi Note 10 5G – but it gives different results here.

Unity principle

By default, the Poco F3 takes 12-megapixel shots with Pixel binning. 48MP full definition and allows to obtain a completely different result from the default definition.

We notice the biggest difference during the day. At 12 megapixels, the image is highly contrasting, if not too contrasting, with destructive detail. With 48MP resolution, the smartphone provides more detailed shot and less contrast for a more natural result.

At night, whether the photo is 12 or 48 megapixels, it makes no difference. The software’s processing smooths the image in both cases, and the loss of color is evident, as is the case with chromatic aberrations in some places.

Faced with the Google Pixel 4a – the best optical phone for under 350 euros – the Poco F3 looks weak. The image provided by the Google smartphone is full of detail, the exposure is very correct and the color rendering is very natural.

At night, no match: It’s no longer easy to showcase an ease with Google in providing a night shot with nearly daytime quality. At this level, no competitor in the same segment could do a better job, or even so. However, despite its extreme smoothness, the Poco F3’s night shot takes advantage of good exposure, allowing the entire scene to be seen.

Ultra wide angle unit

Since the Pixel 4a is devoid of an ultra-wide angle unit, we have chosen to compare it to the Samsung Galaxy A32. In the daytime, the Poco F3 performs better, especially thanks to software processing that is less grueling, smoother and more detailed than on a Samsung smartphone.

At night, the shots are noisy, but the Poco F3 offers better exposure.

Front unit, portrait and video position

Up front, the Poco F3 gets a 20-megapixel unit with f / 2.5 aperture – rare enough to emphasize it. The quality is very good, and the exposure is correct, even if the colors are a little forced. The contrast problem we are facing with the rear main unit is not here. Beauty devices are enabled by default; So it will be necessary to be careful to deactivate it so that you don’t end up with a face that has been retouched in software.

The vertical position does not shine and the person cannot be cut properly. Background blurring is imposed a bit in some places, when it is simply not absent. A more unconvincing result with the unit placed at the front, unfortunately.

For video, the Poco F3 can shoot a maximum of 4K at 30fps. It can also shoot 1080p at 960 fps. There is no optical stabilization, but an electronic version to reduce tremors.
