In the context of: Samsung unveiled a grand vision for the future of phone screens some time ago. He sparked the idea of foldable, rollable, and flexible screens. Some of these ideas have paid off (see Galaxy Fold), while others are still in the works. We saw some of these concepts in development today, thanks to a new round of disclosures from Samsung’s display department.
Perhaps the most interesting thing that has been revealed is Samsung’s S-Foldable OLED panel, which cannot be folded once, but twice – it has two separate flexible points between three screen parts.
When folded fully, the S-Fold screen can function like a regular phone, but when extended to the full length of 7.2 inches, you get something akin to a tablet.
It’s a very cool idea, although it’s hard to say how practical or popular it is. The Galaxy Fold wasn’t exactly a bestseller (and it probably wouldn’t even be cheaper), so a device that effectively doubles the design won’t be much better.
Samsung display also features a sliding OLED screen and a 17 ” foldable panel. The latter appears to be basically using the same Galaxy Fold technology, only to expand.
However, the former has something more exotic under the hood: the screen slides to the right, allowing the screen to extend a few inches. We’re not quite sure how it works, but it definitely looks unique and can be a little more practical than the foldable alternatives.
However, some details are available on any of these OLED technologies at the moment. The former completely removes creases, replacing them with a kind of sliding rail to expand (or shrink) the available screen space.
