Savern. A game to discover the history of dance

15 high school girls, accompanied by their physical education teacher, Bénédicte Bouscarle, benefited from this activity as part of their Dance Choices course. This intervention is part of the program of meetings with professionals. Therefore, with full knowledge of the facts, the young girls entered the dance competition “Body Bagarre”.

The dancer, choreographer and educator, Matthew Herod, explained the rules of this game in the world of dance, the aim of which is to deepen one’s knowledge but also to have a good time together. The class consists of 2 teams of 4 players and 8 spectators who act as judges (involve the teacher to complete the sets).

To start, each team selected four, from about twenty images representing the characters that have marked the history of the dance, and then had to rank them in chronological order. Mathieu introduced the life and work of these dancers and choreographers, putting them in their time and putting a short excerpt from their work on screen.

Next, the players had to face the imposed challenge: reproduce the displayed sequence or perform other, more accurate exercises such as puppeteering (a person juggling another with their eyes closed) or a commentator game (one team member watches the video on the computer and directs the others). After each challenge, the jury evaluated the performance according to several criteria such as conformity to the original, published creativity, or pleasure provided.

Throughout the afternoon, participants traveled to Louis XIV century to explain Apollo’s entry, then traveled to Japan to discover Putoh and Kazuo Ono’s universe. They imitated the dance of the German witch Marie Wegmann, reproduced the American “Fall and Catch” Doris Humphrey and practiced improvisation by installing tables and chairs according to contemporary choreographer William Forsyth.
