Self-service repair will be Apple’s next service

Apple came under fire earlier this month after iFixit, a platform for the right to repair, discovered a Face ID chip built into the iPhone 13 that makes it nearly impossible to recover it without going through an Apple Store or authorized service provider.

After this misstep, the brand has decided to roll back this plan with the upcoming iOS 15.2 update.

At the same time, it announced a new program that allows its users to repair their iPhone directly at home, using parts and tools from the same brand.

This new program called Self Service Repair, which will begin early next year in the US and expand to other countries in 2022, will provide consumers with access to Apple parts and manuals, as well as recycling of replaced parts.

According to the company, the service will initially focus on the most common items being restored, such as the screen, battery and camera, and will expand to more tech events later in the year.

It will provide you with more than 200 pieces and tools via a dedicated online display interface. It has been determined that it is best intended for users who have the necessary knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For now, the self-service repair is initially limited to the iPhone 12 and 13, but should soon extend to the Mac M1s.

Apple offers some additional details, including the cost of the parts. Apple currently charges up to €361 for an iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 screen replacement and up to €641 for “other damages”.

It’s not clear if the self-service repair includes phone support or access to Service Toolkit 2, Apple’s diagnostic tool.
