The new VR console lets you touch and feel digital objects in the metaverse.
Virtual reality platforms are a hot topic at the moment, so it is only natural that the demand for gadgets that enhance user experience is high.
And the wearable touch controller, dubbed the SpinOcchio, could top it all.
The device was developed by researchers at the MAKinteract Laboratory of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
Using the spinning process – for which it is named – the console aims to recreate the sense of touch in a VR environment.

This is achieved by using rotating and pivoting discs that simulate the sensation of sliding of the skin around the fingertips.

But how did the researchers create this tool?
First, they set the tactile (or tactile) discrimination threshold for skin slip.
Then, using these findings, they tested how “haptic realism of movement and fish is perceived by different visual cues in virtual reality,” the researchers said.
Surprisingly, the team’s findings revealed that in all cases, tactile perception was dominated by visual cues.
Based on their findings, experts recommended using this device with applications that take advantage of the interaction between skin sliding and gripping, as it “contributes more to real-world experiences in virtual reality.”
The SpinOcchio console will be launched at the 2022 Computer-Human Interaction Conference to be held at the end of April in New Orleans.
