Why didn’t Apple (finally) introduce a virtual reality headset?

The virtual reality system, Apple’s mixed reality concept, should see the light of day in the coming months. The brand did not make any news during its annual conference.

One of the most anticipated topics at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference was eventually one of the biggest absentees: virtual reality. If various rumors indicated that the company’s annual conference would not give the center stage to its virtual reality glasses project, hopes remained until Monday evening, at 7 p.m.

If Apple does not publicly realize its plans in this direction, it is simply because the company is not ready, either logistically or technically, to offer its product. Mark Gorman, a business analyst and reporter at Bloomberg, revealed in 2017 the headquarters of RealOS, the operating system behind Apple’s virtual reality products.

according to BloombergApple has not yet reached its production targets. Officially presenting his helmet would be a revelation of his idea and the risk of potential copies while awaiting release.

But the project is far from being an illusion: the RealOS name is now a registered trademark, just over a week ago. It was a specialist journalist, Parker Ortolani, who announced this on Twitter.

Not before 2023

On the other hand, according to the New York Times, the company approached several big names in Hollywood to build its project. According to sources from The Times, Jon Favreau, a producer who is particularly known for some Marvel movies, will be participating.

During the annual conference, many new features related to augmented and virtual reality were announced, which shows that Apple is solidifying its foundations in this direction. However, according to Mark Gorman, the project is not limited to a simple virtual reality headset, but rather a set of applications and functions dedicated to mixed reality.

“For augmented reality, the big new features – announced as planned – are ARKit 6, Metal 3 (for video games) and the new RoomPlan functionality for scanning rooms. All of these new features will play a role in the headset this year. Next, But not today,” Mark Gorman tweeted.

The developments that the journalist refers to are applications and programs related to augmented reality and virtual reality technology.

Finally, if a date for the realization of the virtual reality system is not officially announced, all sources converge in the summer of 2023.
