If someone tries to snatch the computer out of the owner’s hands by unplugging the cable, it will be automatically blocked, preventing data from getting into the wrong hands.
In theory, you could strap the other end to your wrist, and if someone snatched your computer, they wouldn’t be able to access your data. Or you can use it to activate file lock if you just want to get away.
It is certainly excessive for ordinary users, but it may be useful for those in more sensitive professions, such as activists, politicians, journalists, whistleblowers and other at-risk groups. And it is these very particular audiences that BusKill itself is addressing specifically.
BusKill developers have been working on the project for over two years, starting with a do-it-yourself version that works only with Linux and that allows anyone with the hardware to compile the source code.
Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign on the CrowdSupply platform, the USB cable is now available for purchase for $59 (€52.23) and is equipped with an app compatible with macOS, Windows and Linux, where it can be activated or deactivated. One click.
Users more familiar with Linux also have a configuration available that allows you to set a command to encrypt data, so that it cannot be accessed by prying eyes.
