Sony PlayStation 5G: a concept that shows a revolution in smart gaming

After the PlayStation Portable and the PS Vita, Sony has distanced itself from handheld consoles. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is the emergence of so-called gaming smartphones, which are designed specifically for gamers, both technically and in software. However, all current gaming cell phones are mainly smartphones. The concept now shows what a mobile phone could look like based on portable game consoles: the PlayStation mobile phone.

Sony PlayStation 5G

Design studio Anesthesia projects From New York I have thought about what a PlayStation cell phone would look like. As a result, the studio presented several photos that look very promising. It shows a device in the shape of a smartphone, which has the regular buttons and handheld gamepads on the front. However, all the keys look completely flat so the device should actually fit as a regular smartphone without any problems. It is also interesting that the designer has given the phone two front camera sensors, located on the sides of the screen, in addition to stereo speakers on the front. There’s a USB-C port on the side – just like on other gaming smartphones – so gamers can keep playing while it’s charging.

Meanwhile, the back of the Sony PlayStation 5G is in line with the back of a regular cell phone. Only the Zeiss triple camera is placed in the middle, on the basis of which the designer relied on other Sony flagships such as the Sony Xperia 1 II. In addition, the device provides mechanical shoulder buttons that are compatible with the L1 and R1 buttons, as well as the L2 and R2 buttons on the control unit.

A big advantage over other gaming phones

Other gaming phones like the Asus ROG Phone 5 or Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2 also offer special gaming devices. For example, the Lenovo smartphone has a mechanical fan and a retractable front camera in the center for broadcast sessions. Meanwhile, the Asus ROG Phone 5 is designed a little more classic. However, depending on the model, it offers up to six additional sensor buttons. However, all gaming cell phones are essentially cell phones – including the usual frameless design.

On the other hand, with the PlayStation smartphone, Sony could take a different approach and keep the edges of the mechanical buttons. This could mean that the screen housing ratio will be weaker, but the gaming device will have a unique selling point, and as a hybrid device, it can compete not only with smartphones, but also with portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch Lite. So far, however, the Sony PlayStation 5G on display is only a concept. Therefore, it is uncertain when and if such a smartphone will be launched.
